Another Anniversary!

Canadian Clinical Blog by Sheilagh Sherman, BA, BHScOT, MHM, OT Reg. (Ont.) - Sunrise Medical

Hello all!

Has it really been a year since I wrote the article, Happy Anniversary..., in which I marked my 4 year anniversary with Sunrise Medical? This month I celebrate my 5 year anniversary with Sunrise Medical. Where does the time go?

Like I did in last year’s anniversary post, I thought I would reflect upon the past year and share some thoughts – both professional and personal – with you.

What comes first to my mind is something that is very new to me. I have joined Twitter! I do not consider myself to be very social media-savvy so this is big news for me. If you would like to follow me on Twitter, my user name is @clinicalcorner. When I signed up for Twitter, I tried to get my own full name as a user name, but found that it was not available, despite the unique spelling of my first name! Since I often am associated with my blog, @clinicalcorner was a natural second choice. I hope you will follow me! I plan to tweet out links to Clinical Corner articles as they get posted, in addition to sharing other information that may be interesting and relevant to seating and mobility practice.

This past year also saw my graduation from the Master of Health Management program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. With the support of Sunrise Medical (@SunriseMedical on Twitter), I completed this 3 year program, which I have found to be very relevant to my position. In particular, I enjoyed the courses I took in Leadership, Evidence-based Practice, Knowledge Translation, and Health and Safety in Healthcare. I try to apply the information I learned throughout the program in the education sessions I lead and in the blog articles I write. I have to admit that now that I have graduated with the MHM degree, I am enjoying a lot more free time outside of my work hours. I used some of that free time to train for a full marathon and achieved a personal best at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon earlier this month!

In terms of the education sessions I have led this past year, I received a lot of positive feedback on the full-day course, From Off-the-Shelf to Custom Seating: The Spectrum of Possibilities. We took this course to cities in various provinces and had a lot of fun with the hands-on portions of the day building cushions and molding back supports. Unfortunately, we had to limit the number of people who could attend the full-day workshop in person to allow for the hands-on sessions, which meant that some people who wanted to attend were unable to do so. I was able to provide some of the content of the full-day course through our Cyber Series of webinars for those who were unable to attend the full-day workshop, but I understand that it is not the same as experiencing the education in-person. I encourage you to register early for our future full-day sessions that we may bring to your city to avoid disappointment!

The Cyber Series of webinars continues to be popular across Canada. I am always amazed at how we have new people hearing about the Cyber Series and joining in to the webinars. We have even hosted some webinars by special request for organized groups. As my position as Clinical Educator for Sunrise Medical continues to evolve, we try to find new ways to meet the clinical learning needs of therapists across Canada in seating and mobility. Feel free to reach out to me if there is some way that we can help to facilitate education related to seating and mobility in your practice area and location.

As always, please provide your comments, questions, and suggestions regarding Clinical Corner. Please email me at I look forward to hearing from you!
