Wheelchair Handrims

Wheelchair handrims are designed using different materials and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Of these options, each has unique attributes and considerations that should be factored in during the prescription process. Ultimately, handrim selection helps a rider gain independence in their propulsion and can assist with reducing upper limb Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs).

Though the number of options can be overwhelming, asking your client a couple of quick questions to gather information regarding their physical and functional needs can help to reduce the options that you need to take to trial.

As a general guide (not a hard-and-fast rule), below are some suggestions for the different client requirements.

Clients with full hand function

Anodized aluminum handrim

These aluminum handrims have a standard round shape and are generally a no-charge option. These are appropriate for clients with normal strength and shorter daily travel distances.

Aluminum powder coated handrim
Aluminum powder coated handrim

Available in a variety of colors to express your individuality. The powder coated surface has a slightly grippy surface to allow for speed and great looks!

Natural Fit handrim
Natural Fit handrim

The oval shape provides additional surface area, opening the grip and providing a more ergonomic push, which can help reduce RSIs and improve push. These handrims also offer a connection between the wheel rim and the handrim, referred to as the "thumb grip." This can help to open the client's grip on the wheel as well as increase the surface area of pushing. The thumb grip is offered in Standard and Super Grip – the Super Grip has a tackier surface to increase grip. These are useful for riders with good strength and grip who travel longer daily distances.

Clients with slightly less hand function

Ellipse 3R handrim

Oval-shaped handrim with a rubber gription strip embedded into the top of the handrim for added grip. This combination offers a more ergonomic push style with the added benefit of the extra grip for riders with less hand or finger function.

CarboLife Gekko handrim

Even though these are the most ergonomically shaped handrims and have a rubber gription strip on the top, they are a lightweight option. The anodized low-friction surface at the sides prevents heat generation during braking.

Clients with limited hand function

Plastic coated handrim
Plastic coated handrim

These round handrims feature a full plastic coating to enhance grip and control. The added friction can generate heat, so wearing gloves is recommended for comfort.

Q-Grip handrim
Q-Grip handrim

Round in shape, but larger circumference than plastic coated handrims. These handrims have a neoprene coating for added grip. The Q-Grip typically has better durability when compared to the plastic coated handrims, which may be useful for harder-use riders.

These handrims are even more ergonomically shaped, with a rounded cross-section to fit the hand, open the grip, and reduce RSIs. They offer a robust anti-slip coating for additional grip, a great solution for tetraplegics who want to push a manual wheelchair.

8 Oblique handrim

For those with very limited or no finger function, these handrims have a series of tabs coming off the handrim that can be pushed with the palm. These handrims can be use for shorter distances around the house, but be wary if you start going down hills, as it's difficult to time where the tabs will be at higher speeds.

Selecting the right handrim can make a significant difference in a rider's comfort, efficiency, and long-term joint health. By understanding your client's hand function, strength, and daily mobility needs, you can confidently narrow down the options and recommend a handrim that supports their independence. Whether they need enhanced grip, an ergonomic shape, or greater durability, there's a handrim to match. As always, a thorough assessment and hands-on trials are key to finding the best fit.
